What we fix

Engine work and diagnostics, gearboxes and clutches, brakes and suspension. At your home or work around Buxton, or at our garage in Smalldale.

01

Engine and diagnostics

From a warning light to a car that just doesn't feel right. We find the fault properly first, then fix it.

Signs to look out for

  • Engine management or another warning light on
  • Loss of power, or the car dropping into limp mode
  • Misfiring, juddering or rough idling
  • Harder starting than usual
  • Smoke, smells or leaks
  • An electrical fault that comes and goes

What we do

We use professional diagnostic equipment to read and clear fault codes, then test the parts those codes point to, so you're not paying for guesswork. We check electrical systems, performance and efficiency too.

Once we know what's wrong, we talk you through it in plain English and sort the repair, at your home or at the garage. We service engines as well: oil, filters and the regular checks that keep a car running sweetly.

Gearbox and clutch

Clutches and gearboxes work hard on steep High Peak roads. We find out what's wrong and put it right.

Signs to look out for

  • A clutch that bites high, or slips as you pull away
  • Grinding or crunching going into gear
  • Gears that are hard to find or jump out
  • A whine or rumble that changes with the gear
  • A judder as you pull away
  • Oil under the car near the gearbox

What we do

We check the clutch and its hydraulics, the gear linkage and the gearbox oil, and road test the car to pin down where the noise or the slip is coming from.

Then we explain what it needs: an adjustment, a fluid change, a new clutch or gearbox work.

Brakes

Buxton sits high and every road out of it goes downhill, so brakes earn their keep here.

Signs to look out for

  • Squealing or grinding when you brake
  • The car pulling to one side under braking
  • A soft or spongy pedal, or one that goes further down
  • Shaking through the pedal or the steering wheel
  • The brake warning light on
  • A handbrake that won't hold on a hill

What we do

We check pads, discs, calipers, hoses and fluid, and replace what's worn. Most brake work can be done on your drive.

If something is getting near the end but has life in it yet, we'll tell you that too.

Suspension

Potholes, speed bumps and frost-broken lanes wear suspension out. A new knock is the car telling you something has gone.

Signs to look out for

  • Knocking or clunking over bumps
  • The car bouncing or wallowing after a dip
  • One corner sitting lower than the others
  • Uneven wear on the tyres
  • Wandering, or a vague feel to the steering
  • An MOT advisory for a spring, link or bush

What we do

We find which corner the noise is coming from and which part is worn: a coil spring, a shock absorber, a drop link, a bush, a ball joint or an arm. Then we replace it.

A broken spring can cut into a tyre, so don't leave a new clunk for long.

Questions

Things people ask us

01 Do you come to me, or do I bring the car to you?

Either. We're a mobile mechanic and a garage. Plenty of jobs can be done at your home or work around Buxton. If a job is better done in the garage, we'll say so and you can bring it to us in Smalldale.

02 How much will it cost?

It depends on the car and what's wrong, so ring or message us with the make, the model and what it's doing. Once we've found the fault, we'll talk you through what it needs.

03 Can you just read the fault code for me?

Yes. Reading and clearing fault codes is part of our diagnostics. A code tells you where to look rather than which part has failed, so we usually test before we recommend a part.

04 Which areas do you cover?

Buxton and the villages around it, from our base in Smalldale. If you're not sure whether we come out your way, ring and ask.

05 How do I book a job?

Ring or text 07482 316617, message us on Facebook, or use the form on our contact page.

Not sure which job it is?

Describe what it's doing and we'll tell you what we think.
